UMD Center for Indic Studies Announces Fall 2011 Seminar Series “Culture-ing Education in America” Friday, Sep 16, 12noon-1pm CCB115 – Charlton College of Business Maureen Hall, PhD UMass Dartmouth Narrative "Life-Mapping" to Deepen Learning: Research from a Fulbright in India Maureen Hall, PhD, is Associate Professor of Education at UMass Dartmouth's School of Education, Public Policy, and Civic Engagement (SEPPCE). She was awarded a Fulbright-Nehru Scholar for , traveling to India to research Super Accelerated Learning Theory (SALT). This work grows out of her collaborative efforts with the Center for Indic Studies. In India, Dr. Hall was affiliated with both the University of Allahabad and with Kuruom Vidyalaya, a school founded by Professor Bal Ram Singh of UMass Dartmouth in rural India where elements of the SALT model were introduced for teaching and learning.

She co-authored Grassroots Postmodernism: Remaking the Soil of Cultures and Escaping Education: Living as Learning at the Grassroots. Inspired by the ideas of Ivan Illich, Mahatma Gandhi, Thomas Berry, & Rabindranath Tagore, Dr. Prakash’s work is a celebration of ecological literacy and cultural and natural diversity. She is on the editorial team of the journal, YES! Building a Just and Sustainable World.

UMD Center for Indic Studies Announces Fall 2011 Seminar Series “Culture-ing Education in America” Part II – 2011 Gandhi Distinguished Lecture Friday, Oct. 7, 7pm – 9pm CCB115 – Charlton College of Business Madhu Suri Prakash, PhD Penn State University “ Escaping Education or Schooling the World? ” This informal Friday evening conversation will juxtapose the ideals of those “escaping education” with those promoting policies being designed to “school the world” as a basic universal and universalizable liberty and welfare right. The conversation that unfolds from this juxtaposition will, hopefully, draw upon the genius of all those present – including those who are questioning the goals and means of the educational system.

UMass Dartmouth Center for Indic Studies “Archarya Ramsamooj’s Influence on SALT and AVA School” Pandit Ramadheen Ramsamooj, M.Ed.., is director of the 3R’S Foundation, and a member of the Center for Indic Studies faculty at UMass Dartmouth. Pandit Ramsamooj is the author/creator of the Super Accelerated Learning Technology (SALT) educational model, which combines British, American, and Vedantic educational philosophy principles.

UMD Center for Indic Studies Announces Fall 2011 Seminar Series “Culture-ing Education in America” Friday, Dec. 2, 12noon-1:30pm CCB115 – Charleton College of Business Elana Rosenbaum, MS, LICSW “Mindfulness in Medicine: Educating Patients and Doctors about Mindfulness” Elana Rosenbaum, MS, LicSW, is adjunct faculty at the renowned Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, & Society at UMass Medical School. Along with Jon Kabat-Zinn, she was one of its founding teachers. A former Non-Hodgkins lymphoma patient herself, she’s been teaching and educating patients and healthcare professionals in mindfulness, including leading cancer centers, for over 25 years.
