August 7, 2006 David Hitlin DOE Annual Program Review The Caltech HEP Program  This is the last year of a three year grant  There have been some organizational changes in the grant Previous years  LHC computing, formerly Task N, is now a separate grant  General and technical support has been folded into Task C  Task D for Barish’s Global Linear Collider Design Effort This year  Added Task E for Sunil Golwala’s OJI  Our major ongoing activities are CMS, MINOS, and BABAR  Future possibilities No a, SNAP, Super B Factory, ILC  Initiatives 140K for SNAP (FY06 supplement) 100K additional request for the Theory Group for Sergei Gukov 50K additional request for a postdoc for Sean Carroll (who is supported on a Moore grant) We have been actively working to hire new experimental faculty  An Assistant Professor offer made this year was turned down  We will renew the search in the coming academic year

August 7, 2006 David Hitlin DOE Annual Program Review Budget Summary Request 8% increase in base funding, plus various initiatives

August 7, 2006 David Hitlin DOE Annual Program Review Theory

August 7, 2006 David Hitlin DOE Annual Program Review Experimental Groups

August 7, 2006 David Hitlin DOE Annual Program Review ILC Global Design Effort Barry Barish is leading the ILC GDE, aiming to produce a  20% cost estimate by the end of 2006

August 7, 2006 David Hitlin DOE Annual Program Review Summary  The Caltech program remains vigorous  We are playing leadership roles in our running and close to running experiments, as well as in the ILC CMS, MINOS, BABAR GDE for the ILC  Reacting to the pending demise of the existing US collider facilities, we are looking in new directions Particle astrophysics – CDMS (Golwala), SNAP Next generation neutrino physics - No a An offshore Super B Factory ILC R&D (proposal for detector R&D was not approved)
