Benefits

How is a child’s cognitive ability affected by the use of computers at an early age? Strengthens fine motor skills Provides auditory and visual support Provides familiarity with technology

What choices need to be made when educators are searching for appropriate software for the classroom? Is the software age appropriate? Does it enhance the curriculum? Does it encourage exploration and imagination?

What are the social benefits for children when using a computer in the classroom? Cooperative learning They share new information Students initiate interactions more frequently

What are the benefits that educators can expect from using computers in the classroom; beyond that of student proficiency? New tool for student assessment and evaluation Educators can connect traditional lessons to the computer

Why is it necessary that educators learn to be proficient in technology as well as teach it in the classroom? Technology plays a vital role in society and our students need to be properly equipped with technological instruction Educators are able to share their new info with other educators

Potential Risks

What are the effects when the teacher does not have the appropriate computer skills that are needed to properly instruct her students? If software is too difficult students become discouraged and frustrated If software is below age appropriate level students will become easily bored

Are young students physically capable of maneuvering a keyboard? Physicians are concerned about the physical effects that computers have on children For example: eye strain, back strain, carpel tunnel syndrome

How does the computer hinder the cognitive and social growth of young children? Computers stunt students’ imaginations and creative play Computer use has shown that students’ attention span has shortened and students themselves become less patient

Are computers making students more difficult to teach? Students become accustomed to the entertainment factor associated with computer use Diminished creativity leads to problems in writing
