S B P M (Simplified Blood Pressure Monitor) Team Members: Vladimir Jeune Zalian Za Malinda Thomas

Introduction Problem About 50 million US adults has high blood pressure Uncontrolled high blood pressure can lead to heart attack, stroke kidney failure, or heart failure About 1/3 of those who have high blood pressure do not know they have it Usually no symptoms Early detection and treatment of high hypertension is critical White-coat hypertension

Introduction (cont’d) Requirements: Intended to be self sufficient (no other technical system required) However, can be hooked up to a computer using any operating system If hooked up to a computer, need internet connection to transfer data Some kind of database program (such as excel) to view charts and graphs (Right now, need computer to enter patient information)

Introduction (cont’d) Intended Users: Intended for any patient who is required to keep a log of blood pressure readings or just anyone who wants to Aimed more towards the elderly (those with poor vision, minimal technical knowledge/experience)

Presentation of Design Ease of Use and Usability. Instructions are understandable but terse. ( So that the user actually reads them). This respects the users time. Molding User the Model. The user will know what to expect because they are told. Allows user to do what supposed to do, without thinking too much about it. They are busy people. We want more consistent use for more solid data. Allows use of core functionality without manual. Since most people do not read it. Allow for collection of pertinent data that can be transported and manipulated. Allows Doctor to spot trends in readings, through charts and graphs.

Presentation of Design (Cont’d) Warnings are Helpful and Useful. (Low Battery Warning,) Keeping elder patients in mind, will also have benefits for other users. Balances collecting useful information and the hassle of obtaining it. Since device is not a hassle to use, it will be used more often. More useful information for Doctor in one place. Simple diary can give indication of what is occurring

Presentation of Design (Cont’d) Quick Stop button for safety. High contrast, back lit, color screen. Easier to see then grey on black LCDs Can schedule of results for Doctor. Data Transfer over wifi. Can also be seen on computer in most popular Spreadsheet applications. 1 or 2 person use, save money for couples. Takes note of Mood and Activity level in user at time of test.

Presentation of Design (Cont’d) Useful views of data. Malleable data (can manipulate.) Use of color and text to reduce memory load on user. 4 months for 1 user, 2 months each for dual users. Large, sharp, clear font used throughout, especially for test results.

Presentation of Design (Cont’d) GUI replicates SUI buttons, so no mistaking what you should do. Reduce user error. Good Sized, sensibly placed, easy to see and hit buttons. Graphs and Charts show good visuallization(if either is present) Buttons have different size and feel for easier learning, and tactile differentiation.

Presentation of Design (Cont’d) Future Work: Voice for blind users, audible Click sounds for GUI Buttons Relocation of buttons

Usability Test Five subjects Two professionals (59f, 32f) Three normal users (65m, 21m, 43f) Task Lists: Setup device Perform normal blood pressure measurements Add another user Login as different user and perform normal blood pressure measurement

Observations and Test Results Simple initial setup Extra user field confusion for single user Confusion on Activity/Mood level selection process On-Screen cues hard to notice Physical buttons location problem Irritation caused by repeated usage of “enter” button

Conclusion Users ranked 8 for simplicity (1 to 9 scale) Failed to implement all features we originally had in our prototypes Focused on more important features to have a working interface
