eGovernment Fact Book Wiki A wiki is a website that uses wiki software, allowing the easy creation and editing of any number of interlinked Web pages, using a simplified markup language or a WYSIWYG text editor, within the browser. Wikis are often used to create collaborative websites, to power community websites, for personal note taking, in corporate intranets, and in knowledge management systems. Most wikis serve a specific purpose, and off topic material is promptly removed by the user community.

How Do We Do It? Do… Establish a Social Networking Policy that is embraced by leadership and integrated into the organization. Establish narrow-focused topics with enthusiastic following! Empower people in your organization to maintain these networks. Solicit help from the community/volunteers. Develop a flexible business model. Use free resources, or resources available to you from non- traditional sources. Create partnerships. Experiment and give it time.

Use Web 2.0 and Social Networking to: Enhance customer service. Increase citizen satisfaction. Drive more people to online services. Encourage citizen interaction. Create collaborative environment. Deliver information and services the way people expect to do business.

Pitfalls Don’t… Set something up and never go back to it. Think that no one is reading your posts – be grammatically correct! Use only one resource – diversify. Think it’s a waste of time. Think that you can ignore it because it’s a fad. Hold people back in your organization who are willing to do it. Ignore non-traditional resources, such as students, volunteers and members of your community. Think inside the box. Be afraid to experiment. Think that government is not going to change. Wait.

Beware of the Naysayers That will never work! The Internet is for “Techno Wienies.” The numbers just aren’t there. Where’s the proof? Have you lost your marbles? What a waste of time! And the list goes on and on…
