Problem The average user is concerned with leaving home without safely turning off all of their appliances. This can cause anxiety, stress, or home damages in the case of appliances that do not need to be left unattended for extended periods of time.
Solution Appliance Texter allows consumers the ability to remotely monitor and control the state of their home appliances. Wireless Monitor via (SMS) request on/off state of the appliance through a text message Wireless Controls via (SMS) Turn the appliance on or off with another text message

Practical Constraints
Manufacturability - Size Appeal Users don’t want a bulky product. Compatibility Must fit the NEMA 5 standard [1] [2]
Social – Simple: Many Service Providers Large Coverage Area [3]
Social-Simple cont. Easy Setup Plug it in Insert SIM card Text User – Friendly Majority of population knows how to text [4] [5]

Prototype Setup
Subsystem Testing Power Supply Current Sensor Relay GSM Module Microcontroller
Power Supply Switching power supply has a large range of options. 3.4V was chosen for operation
Power Supply Resistance (Ohms)Voltage (volts)Current (amps)
Current Sensor Test setup for current sensor to prove accuracy Pic24 Interface with current sensor
Current Sensor cont. ApplianceADC Voltage Measured Current (in Amps) Calculated Current Percent Error Can Opener % Quesadilla Maker % 40W lamp % Toaster % Tube TV %
Relay Relay Test showing relay is able to handle 120VAC appliances
GSM Module AT commands to control module operation
GSM Module cont.
GSM module transmitting text message
Microcontroller PIC24 Microcontroller layout and testing station Bootloader serial interface to the PIC 24 Used to monitor output from testing code
System Testing
System Testing cont. Sunny Day Case Sending turn off command Rainy Day Case Sending unknown command (test message)
