Friday Night “Windstorm” Winds gusted to 45 mph at Whidbey Is Naval Air Station and 64 mph at Tatoosh Island. 43 mph at Port Townsend. 53 mph at Smith Island. KING 5 special report SEDRO WOOLLEY, Wash. - A wind storm whipped through Western Washington Friday night. Fierce wind gusts topping 50 mph toppled trees and brought down power lines in the northern half of Western Washington. The National Weather Service issued wind advisories and warnings for the Northwest Interior, and the western Strait of Juan de Fuca. In Sedro Wolley, traffic lights along busy US 20 were blacked out, along with businesses forced to shut down on what would have been a busy Friday night. “It’s too windy,” said the clerk at an AM/PM as he picked up flyers which had blown across the pump islands. The station was without power for some two hours, before Puget Sound Energy repaired downed lines. In Mount Vernon, police cordoned off an area off Kincaid St. where a falling tree ripped the power lines down. Justina Lemcke was looking out her window when she saw the tree start to fall. “It was falling really slowly and all of a sudden the line was ripped out of the side of the house,” she said as she was lighting candles. She’s worried the rest of the tree will come down, “falling on the cars or house by the corner. I am very nervous about that too,” she said.
