A Quick History After WWI the Czech Republic and Slovakia joined to form Czechoslovakia as part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. After WWII Czechoslovakia fell to the Soviets and became part of the communist Soviet Union. 1989 the Velvet Revolution freed the country from communism. January 1, 1993 Czechoslovakia split into the Czech Republic and Slovakia. The Czech Republic joined NATO in 1999 and the European Union in 2004.
