Navigating the Intranet with High Precision Huaiyu Zhu Alexander L¨oser Sriram Raghavan Shivakumar Vaithyanathan

Problem Addressed  Search over large enterprise intranets suffers from poor quality results.  Focus on providing high quality answers for navigational queries in intranet.  Increase in navigational searches within intranet.  Current approaches provide low precision on Intranet search.

Solution !!!  Offline identification of navigational pages. Local Analysis – Identifies navigational pages Global Analysis – Eliminates spurious pages.  Generate intelligent term variants to associate with each page.  Construct separate indices devoted for answering navigational queries from semantic buckets.  Use of Regular Expression and external dictionaries.

Comments on Solution !!  It Definitely improves precision on search compared to W3.  Use of Geo-sensitivity. Important pages wrongly classified.  Unavailable to many users.  Rules used for person names generator not very clear.  Availability of Dictionary sets could be a problem.

Relation  In class we learnt about Search Engine technologies.  Focused on algorithms that improve search results.  Paper discusses about Search in intranet.  Overview of algorithms used for internet & states why it cannot be used in intranet.
