Can My Students Succeed if I Offer My Class Online?

My Background I am the College’s faculty software trainer (Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, PowerPoint (beginning and advanced), Camtasia, Lectora, Irfanview, Adobe GoLive (web authoring), Blackboard and all of Blackboard’s many features, etc.) I am the College’s Blackboard administrator I teach Computer Art I and II online I am the College’s faculty software trainer (Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, PowerPoint (beginning and advanced), Camtasia, Lectora, Irfanview, Adobe GoLive (web authoring), Blackboard and all of Blackboard’s many features, etc.) I am the College’s Blackboard administrator I teach Computer Art I and II online

I found one of the most difficult things about making a traditional class into an interactive, online class is mentally converting the material over into the virtual world.

Secondly, you have to find the tools that will help make this conversion possible.

It is difficult enough to keep students on pace in a face-to-face class, but online it’s tougher. If the student doesn’t feel like the instructor is right there with them to guide, encourage, and even discipline, the chances of bringing them to a successful conclusion is greatly diminished. This session will demonstrate the process of converting a lab intensive class into a stand-alone, online class using video screen captures on CD, and discussion boards. Methods used to motivate and encourage the students will be shared from multiple experiences and classes. Immediate Needs of the Students I provide them with a crash course on compositioncomposition I provide them with information on How to Save Files for BlackboardSave Files for Blackboard

Immediate Needs of the Students Then I must provide them with information on How to Post Files to BlackboardPost Files to Blackboard

Immediate Needs of the Students I mentioned a CD… One week before my class starts I mail a CD to all of my online students. The CD contains class lectures and demonstrations covering their textbook.

Immediate Needs of the Students

I provide some extras to encourage and reinforce what the students are learning. Here is one example. Here is one example.

Opportunities for the students to exhibit their work are provided through posting within Blackboard or links to sites on the Internet.links

My Immediate Needs Communications issues, either through the discussion board or other various communications, is addressed through the use of netiquette.

Additional Needs for me… I use Irfanview to make screenshots of the statistics page in Blackboard to show the students that I know just how much they are really doing and when.

Feedback Input from the students has been positive from the very beginning, which was three years ago. “Having the course lectures and Photoshop videos on CD is great. I can take it with me anywhere to do my work.” “The CD saved my life!” Input from the students has been positive from the very beginning, which was three years ago. “Having the course lectures and Photoshop videos on CD is great.
