Russ Rucinski, FNAL, Oct. 8, MICE Cryostat Status 1.Prototype cryostat A. Status & Plans B. Parts C. Operating data (supplemental) 2.Four final cryostats A. Status & Parts left to acquire B. Assembly area & pictures C. Schedule

Russ Rucinski, FNAL, Oct. 8, Prototype Cryostat Status Status: Cold, loaded with new cassette #112 in slot 2. Temperatures and heat loads up slightly from previous operation, but within operating margin (at 60 Hz) cryocooler power. The trouble may be with cassette #112 construction, but won’t be able to confirm until we warm up and can look at it. Plans: Staying cold until characterization of #112 is completed.

Russ Rucinski, FNAL, Oct. 8, Nomenclature/Parts – stripped down Invar Envelopes Clamping bars Cryocooler with upper and lower cooling stages Lower Thermal Links Upper Thermal Links

Russ Rucinski, FNAL, Oct. 8, Nomenclature/Parts Lid Upper intercept Lower intercept Cryocooler Lower Thermal Links Upper Thermal Link G10 stiffener panels (Copper radiation shield & MLI not installed)

Russ Rucinski, FNAL, Oct. 8, Prototype – Recent operating info. *Heat loads up a bit. Upper CryoCooler temperature 49 K versus 47 K Lower CryoCooler temperature 5.9 K versus 5.3 K From load map; 58 W & 4.5 W versus 55 W & 4.0 W *Heat flow across the links up. Q= (K*A/L) ΔT Upper link ΔT = 8.5 K versus 7 K Lower link ΔT = 0.21 K versus 0.13 K *Cassette Temperatures up. (9.0 K req) 105: 7.8 K versus 7.5 K #112: 8.2 K versus #111: 7.1 K ΔTΔT

Russ Rucinski, FNAL, Oct. 8, Prototype – Recent operating info. *Cassette 112 upper bulkhead 3 F colder – implies higher heat load down the upper part of cassette. #112: 69 F#105: 72 F Lid temp = 70 F I suspect foam is missing from upper. I think foam in lower is there.

Russ Rucinski, FNAL, Oct. 8, Four final Cryostats: Status All parts here except: Invar envelopes: Promised by Oct. 20 th Cryo-Coolers: Have 2. Other 2 still at RAL, H 2 R&D Cassettes: Have four. #105, #111, #112 & #107 (just negotiated). Eventually need eight. BackPlane structure: Need to re-order base plate, misc. parts

Russ Rucinski, FNAL, Oct. 8, Four final Cryostats: Assembly Area “Area 51”: D-Zero Experiment Highbay Fermilab

Russ Rucinski, FNAL, Oct. 8, Four final Cryostats: Assembly Areas “Solder station”: Thermal link work

Russ Rucinski, FNAL, Oct. 8, Four final Cryostats: Assembly Area Work done/being done: G-10 stiffener panels MLI taped. Working on lid plumbing Tinning OFHC flexible strips for thermal links Next: lid heaters, cryocooler mounting, instrumentation feed thru’s, Thermal link assembly

Russ Rucinski, FNAL, Oct. 8, Four final Cryostats: Draft Schedule? October 2006– Thermal link assembly, lid work, delivery of invar envelopes. November/December First production cryostat completed, use Cassette 111 & 107. Cool down, evaluate. Warm up. January 2007 – Second production cryostat done. Load with 105 & 112? Cool down, evaluate. February - April 2007 – Third and Fourth cryostats done, tested. Note: Cassettes cannot be pulled/changed without unbolting lid, undoing MLI and loosening the clamping bars at the intercepts. So cryostats really aren’t final until loaded with final cassettes and tested.

Russ Rucinski, FNAL, Oct. 8, Closing Remarks Prototype: Successfully commissioned. Minimal risk of not being able to obtain operating temperature control. Use for station 5, UK or KEK – Nov/Dec.06* Four Final Cryostats: Will be ready ahead of schedule. November, 2007 – 4 cryostats, 8 cassettes (4 more need to be liberated from D-Zero with negotiation).* *revision based on input at CM16
