Mechatronics 1 Week 1

Learning Outcomes What is a robot and analysis on how it works will be presented in this course (week 1 to week 13). By the end of this session (week 1), students will understand the terms mechatronics and robots.

Course Outline Mechatronics & Robots. Industrial robots Service robots Robot joints Robot coordinates

MECHATRONICS 1 (2 + 2 credits) MechanicsElectronics Robots + Non Robots Mechatronics

Robots & Robotics Robot –Karel Cepek, a Czechoslovakian playwright, used the word “Robot” for the first time in his play called R.U.R. - Rossum’s Universal Robot in –Robota means worker in Czech language. Robotics –The word “Robotics” was introduced by Isaac Asimov to describe the science of dealing with robotics. –Three laws of Robotics, a well known robotics law by Isaac Asimov.

Classification of Robot Classification 1 Industrial Robot Service Robot Human Needs Classification 2 Fixed Robot Mobile Robot Wheeled Robot Legged Robot Equipment Needs (no direct contact with people)

Industrial Robot ??? 1. British Robot Association (BRA): “ A reprogrammable device designed to both manipulate and transport parts, tools, or specialised manufacturing implements through variable programmed motions for the performance of specific manipulating tasks.” 2. Robot Institute of America (RIA) : “ A reprogrammable multifunctional manipulator designed to move material, parts, tools or other specialized devices through variable programmed motions for the performance of a variety of tasks.”

Industrial Robot ??? 3. Japan Industry Robot Association (JIRA  JRA) : Manual handling devices Pick and place devices Programmable variable sequence manipulators Robots taught manually Robots controlled by a programming language Robots which can react to their environments

Industrial Robot ??? 4. International Standard Organization (ISO 8373) : “ An automatically controlled, reprogrammable, multipurpose, manipulator programmable in three or more axes, which may be either fixed in place or mobile for use in industrial automation applications.” 5. Indonesia ? ? ?

Service Robot International Federation of Robotics (IFR) : “ A robot which operates semi or fully autonomously to performs services useful to the well being of humans and equipment, excluding manufacturing operations.”
