Databases – A Key to Unlocking the Future Database Efficacy – Uses in the Classroom

What is a database?  Program that allows one to organize and store data  Program that allows one to find patterns in data  Allows one to explore and analyze problems  Data can be filtered and sorted  Allows for data to be examined by category  Provides various ways for data to be viewed

Applications – Databases in the Classroom  Allows students to:  Organize data  Categorize  See relationships between categories  Explore problems  Formulate hypotheses  Compare and contrast  Make inferences

Database Lessons in the Classroom  English Create a database that contains prefixes, roots, and suffixes. The database contains fields labeled “Type”, “Part”, “Definition”, and “Origin”. Students can query by type, origin, or query a random Prefix-Root-Suffix trio and create a new word. Next, students need to bolster their findings by looking up the word in the electronic dictionary hyperlink. In addition, students can fill in the fields that the teacher left blank.

Database Lessons in the Classroom  Social Science Have students collect and enter data about World War I, World War II, Civil Rights Movement, or any other topic relevant to your social science curriculum. Password protect it so that only your classes can enter data, but the databases are accessible for anyone.

Database Lessons in the Classroom  Science Working in groups, students study weather patterns, and investigate how they affect the weather where they live. Using a database, students will collect, organize, and analyze the data. Next, they will make predictions about the weather in their community and abroad. In addition, they will analyze why predicting specific weather cycles and patterns are important. A very helpful link that contains a specific weather pattern in below. ml ml

Using Databases for Staff Development Lesson Plan Database An excellent way to share lesson plans and ideas with staff. Create an online database similar to Taskstream, where teachers may post lessons, favorite web sites, and scoring rubrics. URL Database Teachers can create a list of their favorite web sites. Each site can be searched by topic.

Using Databases for Staff Development Technology Needs Database This database would be created after staff completed a questionnaire regarding type and level of technology use. This database would provide answers to common technological problems, and serve as a way to encourage collaboration between staff members.
