Peter Brook’s 1971 Film Barbaric, hellish Disturbs audience and challenges their view of good evil. Set reflected the idea that the world is in a constant state of decomposition Sterility, repressed, harsh Disintegrated as the play progressed. Morally neutral text. Characters non- emblematic Sympathy and sentiment set aside. Central concern is man’s role in the universe.

1998 Bell Shakespeare Directed by Barrie Kosky Non- naturalistic Intended to shock with an other world. Pop art, video images and cartoons were used as backdrops. Essential reality was the language and actions of characters. John Bell felt free to focus on Lear’s analysis of human corruption. Dover scenes – ‘carnivalesque’ Knights Bleak and cruel world

‘King Lear’ in Performance The Cut Theatre UNSW – Excisions made to the script: The very first scene was deleted. Cordelia’s asides were not included in the declaration scene. The part of the Fool was deleted altogether Edmund’s bid to redeem himself. Kent’s last lines were also deleted.
