Welcome CAED Advisory Council, Faculty, Students & Guests Interdisciplinary Education Collaboration in Design-Build

The Cartoon - Not So Funny n In reality, the attitude depicted in the cartoon is often typical. n The traditional system for project delivery is filled with disincentives for collaboration – Retainage, penalty clauses, low bid

Current Project Delivery System n Common Themes – Separate silos of responsibility n Owners n Designers n Builders – Arms length between Owner and Designer/Builder – Opposite incentives - shift risk to the other parties – Disputes - Winner(s)/Loser(s)

Call to Arms n There is agreement among all parties, (owners, designers, and builders) that things aren’t working. n Owners are probably the leading driving force for alternative delivery methods. n A call for more collaboration & cooperation among the parties.

Trends Toward Collaboration n Design-Build (from 35% now to over 50%) n In 1997 a diverse group of owners, designers, and builders got together in San Francisco to discuss this very topic. n Discussed openly the experiences and expectations of each group n What they found – Common experiences – Common expectations

Common themes for Owner’s, Designer’s, Builder’s Experiences r Trust is low, suspicion high r High risk of financial loss - all parties r Blame the other party(s) for the problem r Communication - difficult to get on the same page r Relationships are adversarial r Decision processes are unclear - shaky

Common themes for Owner’s, Designer’s, Builder’s Expectations r Superior/Extraordinary project results r Financial success r Projects to be proud of r Open book for/to all parties-common systems r Efficient work processes/eliminate the redundancies r Willing to be accountable - share the risk r Repeat business - want to work together again r Advocates not adversaries

Collaboration Takes r Cultural shifts regarding – Risk Management – Project Delivery – Project Management r Trust and commitment r New Approaches – Team Building/Create focused high performance teams – Contracts – Systems o Performance measurement o Common communication tools r Investment – Training – Continuous Improvement

Collaboration - What is it?? n A New Way of Doing Business – From Individual Agendas - to Team Work – From Suspicion - to Trust – From Adversarial - to Collaboration n Pieces Familiar but... n Process Can Be Revolutionary Optimal Quality Schedule Cost

Collaboration - The Results n Extraordinary Results – Lower Costs – Shorter Cycle Times – Accountability all around - Shared Risk – Financial Success – Measurable Results – Efficient processes/eliminate the redundancies – Advocates not adversaries – Repeat business - want to work together again

Our Best Hope - Education n We can best influence collaboration in the workforce by modeling collaboration for our students. n Interdisciplinary industry panels are an excellent way to model interdisciplinary collaboration n Our guests tonight are an example of such collaboration

Tonight’s Presentation n Council’s interest & college’s interest in seeing more interdisciplinary education n Advisory Council Meeting Minutes - April 1999 – CM 431 to sponsor a forum on a project to highlight the use of industry panels to model interdisciplinary collaboration

Our Guests n John Olsson - – Hathaway-Dinwiddie Construction Company n Michael Uyeda - – Graeber, Simmons & Cowan n The Project: – Applied Materials Technology Center – Suunyvale, CA
