Cholera: Outbreak in Haiti By Anu & Dimitri

What is Cholera? A infection of the small intestine Caused by a bacteria called : Vibro cholerae Highly contagious Causes excessive diarrhea and vomiting Known treatments include antibiotics, fluids, and electrolytes.

How do you get Cholera? Ingesting the following: ▫Poor drinking water ▫Contaminated food  Mostly found in seafood such as plankton and shellfish

Location Matters Cholera breakout in more unsanitary locations: ▫Mostly in developing counties  Haiti  India Russia

How did it start in Haiti? “peace-keepers" brought contaminated food and water. strain found in Haiti is the same strain as the one in South Asia scientists also say that it spread due to atmospheric/climate changes in Haiti, they reason it with the earthquake that occurred in January of 2010

Preventing the spread of cholera When water is not always boil the water before using it keep things sanitary, so constantly washing hands and body is vital. For people who already have the disease, it is very important that they use the correct disposal methods for feces, such has having sanitizing chemicals in toilets Maintaining fluid and electrolytes

Additional Questions Is there a way to provide third-world countries with affordable antibiotics to help control the disease so it doesn't spread? Why isn't there more effort to make poor countries (the source of the problem) more sanitary?
