Cisco – Semester III Documentation

What is it most important component of a good network?  Documentation

What is the least performed network activity?  Documentation

Documentation Consists of:  Network Diagrams  MDF & IDF Layouts  Server & Workstation Config  Software Listings  Maintenance Records  Security Measures  User Policies

Network Diagrams  Include the following:  Cut sheets  Labeling schemes  Wiring diagrams  Type of cable  Etc.

MDF & IDF Layouts  Physical layout of closets  Rack placement  Wall outlets  How are the closets locked  Who has access and why

Server & Workstation Configurations  Detailed configuration specs for each server and workstation  Make and model of computers  Serial numbers  IP address  MAC address  Subnet Topology

Software Listing  Lists of standard and special software  Installation details for each piece of software  Includes operating system software and application software

Maintenance Records  List of repairs  Allows some ability to predict possible future problems with existing hardware and software

Security Measures  Soft Security  Passwords  User rights  Firewalls  Physical Security  How are MDF and IDF locked?  Who has access to rooms Why?  Security cables and alarms

User Policies  What is and what is not permissible  What the consequences are for violating any of the policies

Summary  Network Administrator responsibility  Create most secure & functional network possible  Documentation Set  Complete set of items described  Allows for maintenance and upgrades to network in a more orderly fashion  Gives administrator starting place  Return if upgrade goes wrong  Or recover from network failure

Important!!!!  Documentation needs to be continually updated.  OR ELSE  documentation will not have a great deal of relevance to current network
