- Movie Night, Thanks for coming - Next Time: Soldering 101 “Be Early” - HW 03 DUE Today - HW 04 DUE September 18, Proposals and Presentations due September 20, Days To Launch - Today: Team Activity, Special Discussion, HOBO, & Box Announcements:
-How would you keep the balloon from rising out of the desired range? -Why is it required to display a US flag? -Is there a limit to amount of science other than mass? -Is the RFP an additional project? -Are BalloonSats steady before the burst? -How can we help prove these concepts as freshman? -I have learned to use the word "impossible" with the greatest caution. Wernher von Braun -Why not build large telescopes on space stations? -What is the best telescope in the world? -Do all missions have to follow the theme? -When and where will we learn to solder? -How high does political airspace go? -How long is the Hubble Space Telescope? One Minute Paper:
-If telescopes on a platform in near space have so many advantages then why aren’t people doing it? -Is there going to be a new Hubble with new technology? -Is it possible for multiple groups to do the same experiments? -If there are solar powered propellers that allow satellites to get through space, where do they get the air resistance to push on? -What sort of resolution do the CCD cameras have? -What do we do after launch in class? -Does the balloon fly in airspace that airplanes fly? -Concerned with how little the teams will meet? -Why has no one tried to image stars? -Where could we find a telescope cheap and light? - Team Design Competition - Requires, quick thinking, quick design and fun - Each team must bring a working 60 watt light bulb
You and your team are in a 15 meter orbit around Pluto. A group of astronauts are on the surface conducting life sciences research. Included in this group is George Lucas. An engineering defect in the habitat has been discovered. All life support systems are wired in series with a passage way light bulb, similar to a string of Christmas lights. Unless they receive a new, working light bulb in the next 30 minutes, they will all die a horrible death (and Star Wars, Episode VII will never be completed). Your mission is clear. You and your team must get the astronauts that light bulb. At your disposal, as many legos as you could need and one light bulb wrapped in aluminum foil. However, due to risk of the impact damaging the habitat, you asked to use as few legos as possible.
Bulb will be wrapped in a 1’ x 1’ piece of aluminum foil by your instructor and should not be altered ABSOLUTELY NO PUTTING LEGOs IN YOUR MOUTH. Light bulb must not break and must work after landing. Please have your craft ready in 30 minutes for registration and weigh in. First team to turn in will receive a 10 gram reduction Second team to turn in will receive a 5 gram reduction Team not completed after time is called will not be permitted to drop Return to class after all drops, bulb tested there Everyone must help clean up. Craft that weighs the least and successfully lands a working light bulb is the winner
- Work effectively as a team - Remember center of gravity during drop while designing - Plan your design, even sketch it, before you begin building - Don’t be still building when there is only 2 minutes left - Prizes for first and second place Things to Think About:
