Lecture 1 Chapter 1. Descriptive Statistics  This chapter is about summarizing and describing data.  Lets have a look at some data....  An experiment was set up to measure the selenium content of three different types of meat in a region of the United States.  The meats of interest in this region are: Venison; Squirrel; Beef. Venison; Squirrel; Beef.  The units are micrograms (µg) per 100g dry weight…

Venison: Squirrel: Beef:

 Can we easily compare the selenium levels of the three meats by just looking at the numbers?  No! The numbers themselves are not particularly helpful.  It helps to summarize or picture the data.

 E.g. histograms for each meat help us see the relative distributions of selenium content.  Let’s see how the computer package Minitab can produce these for us....
