Information Meeting for the Asia-US Service-Learning (AUSL) Program August 3 – August 30, 2007 At Yuan Ze University March 12, 2007

Program History & Goals History Developed in 2005 in response to growing interest in service and volunteerism Goals To deepen students interest in and understanding of public service and non-profit organizations To study complex social and environmental issues through both academic and hands-on activities To connect “mind learning” with “heart learning”

What is ‘Service-Learning’? A method of teaching, learning and reflecting that combines academic classroom curriculum with meaningful service throughout the community

Program Overview Pre-Program Week 1 & 2: Stanford workshop course: “Service in US and Asia” Week 3: Service Project Week Week 4: Wrap Up Post-Program

Service Project Groups Your “core group” throughout the program students per group Placement based on participants interests and space availability Three Service Project Groups Education Health and Disabilities Urban Issues

Service Project Groups Education Education for under-served groups Bi-lingual education and accommodating immigrants Health and Disabilities Social attitudes towards people with disabilities Care of the elderly and aging societies Urban Issues Root causes of homelessness and poverty in urban and suburban areas

Program Coordinators Plan and lead Service Projects Lead discussions for “Service in US and Asia” class Act as guides and “instant friends” 6 Stanford Coordinators 4 Asia Coordinators (alumni of VIA programs)

Pre-Program AUSL Orientation in Taipei on May 5 Presentation topics chosen and research conducted

Week 1 & 2: Stanford workshop course “AUSL Orientation” “Service in the US and Asia” workshop Extracurricular activities, panel discussions, etc.

Week 3: Service Project Week Accommodations at youth hostel in San Francisco Mix of hands-on volunteering, visits to service organizations, discussions, reflection, and fun Connected to topics covered during “Service in US and Asia” class

Week 4: Wrap Up Reflection Final project Farewell activity at a hotel

Post-Program Stanford Coordinators visit to Asia

Application Process for YZU Students Application deadline is mid April Interview will be held on May 3 or 4 Orientation will be held on May 5 at the YMCA in Taipei

Interview Interview will be in English It will be for about minutes. We are looking for enthusiastic students who are eager to learn through participating in AUSL. Be prepared to explain why you want to participate in AUSL and what specifically you want to get out of this program.
