The Plot Diagram Mr. Tim 6th Grade English

Objectives The student will be able to: Identify and differentiate between the different parts of a story and where they belong on a plot diagram. Arrange a generic plot diagram so that it represents a given story, Prepare a plot diagram for a story he/she has read recently.

What is Plot? Plot – noun: the main storyline of a literary work. Narrative Order: the sequence of events Chronological Flashback Time Lapse Who has heard of plot before? What other things might you talk about when considering plot? - setting, characters, figurative language…

The Plot Diagram Climax Rising Action Falling Action Conflict Exposition: information the author gives you at the beginning of the story. Setting (ie. Time, date, mood, place) Rising Action: A plot usually begins with a problem which the protagonist must meet or solve. During the story, tension is built through a series of complications, incidents which either help or hinder the protagonist in finding a solution. Conflict: the struggle between the protagonist and an opposing force Climax: the peak or turning point of the action; at this point we know the outcome Falling Action: provides any necessary explanation Resolution: at the end of the story, the sense that it is complete. Resolution Exposition

Five Little Monkeys Diagram Climax When is the turning point? 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 Monkeys fall off the bed and bump their heads. Rising Action Falling Action What do the monkeys finally do? What were the monkeys supposed to do? Conflict Ask students to verbally answer the questions based on the book. Resolution Exposition What does mama do? Time? Who? Where?

Review What is plot? What are 3 types of narrative order? What are the 6 elements of plot? What is the exposition? What is conflict? What is rising action? What is the climax? What is falling action? What is the resolution? Call on students individually to answer the questions.

Plot Diagrams as Outlines I. Exposition Who? Where? When? II. Conflict What is the problem? III. Rising Action Event 1 Event 2 Event 3 IV. Climax Where does the story turn? V. Falling Action Necessary explanation? VI. Resolution A sense of completion? Plot diagrams can also be created without drawing a picture. From here, you could write a summary or your own story.
