Environmental scientists are opposed to hog farming. Reasons: Water Pollution Nutrient runoff Erosion Wildlife
Hog farming is a big cause of water pollution The manure runs down into the water and makes the lake polluted This will harm the plants and the animals in the lake If a person ate a fish that had a disease caused by hog waste they could get really sick
Seneca Lake
-Harmed Wildlife-.Wildlife can be harmed from the manure minerals and nutrients are deposited in the lake..Copper is a supplement fed to hogs. When it reaches the water it causes a deadly fish disease called Pfiesteria piscada..The minerals and nutrients also cause algae to form in the lakes. Algae can kill fish and plant life in the water.

Runoff of hog farming Hog farms produce 19 million tons of feces and urine a year or 50 thousand tons every single day. If a person or animal swallows water from a contaminated source, illness can result. Manure can contain bacteria and other organisms that can be harmful to humans if they get into a waterways or ground water. Pathogens can become a problem when manure runs off into lakes where people swim or have direct bodily contact with the water.
Nitrates have led to stomach problems and cancer Water moves the nitrates, copper, and animal manure into the water. Animal manure contains 12x as much nitrogen as human sewage.
Erosion is the loss of soil sediment by water, wind, and ice. Hog farms are prone to erosion because of exposed soil caused from hogs and increased human activity. This is a problem for Seneca Lake because it decreases the water quality by clouding the water.
