IN SUPPORT OF FACULTY EMERGENCY AND SAFETY PREPAREDNESS Senate Resolution 1007

Background Recent events have brought to our attention a need for a more uniform faculty response in the face of an emergency situation at the University of Texas. The disparities among the responses of faculty and staff placed all members of the campus community at risk.

Purpose To create new detailed resources geared towards faculty emergency response training to ensure the safety of faculty, staff, and students.

Current Standard Current resources include the following:   These provide only a basic procedure of how to respond in emergency situations.

Summary Faculty response to the incident was unorganized and revealed a lack of a structured response plan. The faculty can play an integral role in mitigating these situations by being aware and informed. In order to provide an orderly response, it is necessary to create new and improved resources for directing faculty response. This resolution calls for the creation of said resources and their distribution to faculty through department chairs.

Whereas Summary Lines 6-23: Recent events have brought to light the need for a uniform emergency plan. While law enforcement agencies performed commendably ensuring campus safety, there were major disparities in the responses of faculty that could have endangered members of the campus community. Lines 25-29: The UTPD offers training resources, but they are at an inadequate level.

Whereas Summary (cont.) Lines 31-37: Comparison schools including the University of Wisconsin and University of Michigan already have appropriate faculty training measures in place for handling such events. Lines 39-43: The University of Texas should build upon the example of their peer institutions by developing a faculty specific emergency plan.

Resolved/Summary Lines 45-47: The Senate of College Councils calls for the creation of faculty emergency preparedness procedures. Lines 49-51: These resources be presented to department chairs who are then in charge of delegating them to faculty members.
