Global Positioning Systems By: Christine Kavanaugh

Overview GPS is a satellite navigation system originally used by the U.S. Military. Today, thousands of people use GPS. GPS consists of 27 satellite receivers around the world. Only 24 receivers are used at one time.

How GPS Functions 5 Steps –“Triangulating”- takes measurements from three different satellites. –Measuring the distance from the satellite using radio waves. –Perfect timing-use of an atomic clock to prevent a time lag. –Finding accurate satellite positions –Correct all errors

Levels of the Global Positioning System 2 Levels –S–Standard Positioning Service- available to the common public; on one frequency level. –P–Precise Positioning Service-available to specialty services only, such as the military. This is on 2 frequency levels.

Roles of Different Federal Departments Concerning GPS The Department of Defense is responsible for most GPS activity and maintains basic GPS. The Department of Transportation promotes commercial GPS systems. The Department of State provides international guidelines concerning GPS.

Types of GPS Systems Type 1- not self-contained, needs to be assisted by a hand-held device. Type 2- is self-contained, used as a navigation system in cars. Type 3- Professional use only Type 4-removeable systems for cars Type 5- high-tech, automobile tracking device

Common Uses of GPS Navigation Tracking Device Some products consist of: –Garmin handheld products –OnStar

Conclusion The global positioning system has come a long way since it was first invented. It was initially only for military use, but now it is offered to the public.
