Why Study History? Cambridge University says that choosing the following ‘soft options’ at A-Level will put you at a disadvantage: Accounting Art and Design Business Studies Communication Studies Dance Design and Technology Drama/Theatre Studies Film Studies Health and Social Care Home Economics Information and Communication Technology Leisure Studies Media Studies Music Technology Performance Studies Performing Arts Photography Physical Education Sports Studies Travel and Tourism Source: The Sunday Times, January 6, 2008:

Why Study History? The Russell Group of the Top Twenty universities in the UK stated in January 2008: “Students must not disadvantage themselves by choosing a combination of subjects which will not equip them as well as other subjects to excel on their chosen course, or which do not demonstrate as effectively as others their aptitude for a particular subject.” Read this very carefully before you start considering which subjects to take in your options.

Why Study History? “Traditional subjects offer the best preparation for study at degree level. Subjects preferred by the top universities: English Literature History Mathematics Modern Languages Chemistry Physics Less favoured subjects include: Leisure Studies Business Studies Media Studies Travel and Tourism ICT Accounting Source:

Why Study History? Other ‘softer subjects’ are ‘less ideal’ for entry to top universities than traditional academic subjects.

Why Study History? It may surprise you to learn that historians do, in fact, provide more directors of Britain's leading companies in proportion to the number of graduates than any other subject, outperforming law, science and engineering. Source: More leaders in the real world’ of business and industry studied History than any other subject.

Why Study History? It is what our world leaders studied at University!

Why Study History? It’s a rigorous, proper academic subject…...and the top universities, top businesses, top organisations all know this.
