Wind Hazard & Earthquake Engineering Lab: Research and Outreach Florida A&M University – Florida State University Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering NSF/MCEER Site Visit 2003

Florida A&M University – Florida State University Introduction  The Wind Hazard and Earthquake Engineering Lab is located at FAMU-FSU College of Engineering campus.  WHEEL was established in 1999 as part of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering.  The lab’s goal is to promote research in wind hazard and earthquake engineering.

Florida A&M University – Florida State University Introduction  WHEEL conducts research, publishes reports and articles, and provides partial financial support for students.  Some of the research interests include: –passive and active structural control, –sensor/actuator placement using genetic algorithms, –damage mitigation assessment after natural disasters, –computational fluid dynamics for the design and analysis of structures exposed to high winds, –structural health monitoring, –mitigation of pounding.

Florida A&M University – Florida State University Student Researchers  4 Ph.D. students, 2 Graduate students and 4 Undergraduate students  Journal articles published in the Journal of Earthquake Engineering and Structural Dynamics  Invited Presentations of Results at conferences in Los Angeles, St. Louis, and Tokyo, Japan.

Florida A&M University – Florida State University MCEER Research  “An Earthquake Analysis of an Existing Structure in the Southeast Region of the United States”  Structural Description: –Florida Department of Education Building –17 story steel frame (3 bay x 10 bay) –FEM model developed  Passive Control –No external inputs to function –Tuned mass damper and Base Isolator  Damage Approximation –Damage functions, HAZUS

Florida A&M University – Florida State University MCEER Research Cont.

Florida A&M University – Florida State University Education  Developed lab experiments and demonstrations using a small scale shaking table  Information was published as a part of the University Consortium of Instructional Shaking Tables (UCIST)  Structural Dynamics has been integrated into the Civil Engineering Mechanics course at the FAMU-FSU College of Engineering

Florida A&M University – Florida State University REU Programs  Undergraduate students conduct research in the areas of wind and earthquake engineering.  Program concludes with the submission of final reports and oral presentations. REU Summer 1999REU Summer 2000REU Summer 2001

Florida A&M University – Florida State University Outreach  Developed a short course on engineering and natural hazards for elementary school teachers and their students  Students participate in the two week program to help test the course curriculum  Students wrote papers on natural hazards, built buildings with LEGOS, and tested them on the shaking table
