DV 25 info

DV 25 Specs Common Features  DV25 formats include: Consumer DV, DVCPro, and DVCAM, plus DVCPro50 and DVCPro-P.  All DV25 formats record what is called 4:1:1 video, which is compressed at a 5 to 1 ratio and recorded on a narrow tape only 1/4" wide. This results in a data rate of 25 megabits per second. All DV camcorders use the Firewire connection that enables digital transfer from camcorder to VCR or computer. All DV camcorders feature 16 bit PCM digital sound. SP mode: mm/sec mode: mm/sec  DVPro is Panasonic's proprietary upgrade to the Mini DV standard. It uses a much larger tape cassette, which can offer longer recording times. It runs the tape faster so the video signal can be more robust, but it carries no additional picture data so it is really the same picture quality. Mini DV cameras and decks cannot record or play DVPro tapes.  DVCam is Sony's proprietary upgrade to the Mini DV standard. It has the same advantages as DVPro in recording time and robustness, but again, doesn't record a better picture. Most DVCam cameras and decks can play/record Mini DV, but Mini DV gear will not accept DVCam tapes.  Info from Lycos Help

Tape Replacement How the Tape reacts with the Camera When a tape is being recorded or played back, it moves at almost 18.9 mm a second past a drum rotating at 9000 rpm. The drum contains recording/playback heads and its angled so the heads can read and write data tracks diagonally across the tape, a process called helical scanning. An NTSC camera will lay down 10 tracks for one frame of NTSC video, and a PAL camera 12, all in a space the width of a human hair. These tracks contain the video, audio, and data the camcorder uses to manage and keep track of everything. From Shortcourses.com

Hard disk based recording medium provides the videographer with the advantage of capturing directly to the disk drive, thus eliminating the time consuming capture step, and overall lowering the cost of non linear applications. By utilizing industry standard 1394 AV/C control, allows the drive to be controlled via fire Wire controls, allowing the direct drive to record or pause using the record pause function of your camcorder, so the videographer does not have to change the way he does his work.
