The Doctrinal Dimension

Nature of Doctrine Second-order language  First-order: language used in direct experience Prayer, worship  Second-order: language describes first-order experience “suchness” (p 97) Should never be confused with first-order language Develops over time Problems with language  Negative theology  Analogy Capacity of doctrine  Set parameters for discussion  Guide experience

Functions: what does doctrine do? Bring order to stories, myths, symbols of the tradition Explain how these images, stories, and symbols are ultimate and universal Explain beliefs in relation to current knowledge  Therefore, it develops over time and in new situations  Ex: Mahayana and Emptiness Stimulate a new world view Define the community

Interrelational Organically related  To other “internal” doctrines” each scheme (set) is unique because its parts influence meaning of other parts Example: impermanence, interdependence, and no self  To other dimensions of the religion Ritual, experience, story Mutually influential with other dimensions of religion  Emerges from experience  Helps guide experience
