Founding of Purdue and the Board Governed by Indiana Code The Indiana Code provides information on the creation, organization, and powers and responsibilities of the Trustees. Key sections of the IC: –The Board of Trustees of Purdue University may organize Purdue University in conformity with the purposes set forth in Act of Congress, approved July 2, 1862, entitled "An act donating public lands to the several states and territories which may provide colleges for the benefit of agriculture and the mechanic arts” (IC ) –The Board of Trustees of Purdue University may do all acts necessary and expedient to put and keep Purdue University in operation. (IC )

Board of Trustees Consists of ten members –Appointed by Governor –Three selected by Alumni Association –Seven selected by Governor Student Trustee

Board Responsibilities Highest level of governance at Purdue Oversee West Lafayette campus and three regional campuses Two roles: –Chief fiduciary body –Chief strategic body

Fiduciary Body Budget –System Wide Budget: $2.2 billion –General Funds: $1.1 billion Capital Planning –Campus Master Plan –Classrooms, Research, Housing Development

General Funds Expenses: –Salary and Wages –Benefits –Supplies and Expense Revenue: –Tuition –State Appropriations

Strategic Body Hire and work with President Approve and use New Synergies –Strategic Plan Examples: –Curriculum, fundraising efforts, hiring of faculty, student profile, access, rankings –Regional campuses

Student Trustee Reserved position on the Board –Full-time student with two year term Full rights and privileges as a Trustee –Fully vested member –Voting

Duties Perspective –Provide a unique perspective –Responsibility to Purdue Serve on two committees –Physical Facilities –Academic Affairs

Time Commitment Varies –Six Board meetings a year –Occasional committee meetings –Events and activities –Meetings with administrators –Opportunities as student leader Full dedication –Obligations are significant

Application and Selection Process

Who is eligible? All Purdue University students on all campuses –Undergraduate or Graduate students –Non-resident and international students also eligible Must maintain full-time student status during the two-year tenure

Timeline Applications Due February 11 th by 4:00 pm –PSG office (STEW G6) or VPSA office (SCHL 204) –Submit to on-duty receptionist Notification of interviews-February 22 nd Interviews-February 28 th and March 1 st Finalists announced-March 1 st July 1 st appointment

Recommendations Talk with Purdue administration, faculty, staff and students Introduce yourself to issues surrounding higher education and the state of Indiana Attend a Purdue Board of Trustees meeting Reflect on how your past leadership experiences have prepared you to serve as trustee Submit a thorough, well researched application
