Sustainability and the Breuer Building Sustainability and the Breuer Building The Cleveland Green Building Coalition

What is Green Building? Design and construction practices that significantly reduce or eliminate the negative impact of buildings on the environment and enhance occupant experience by addressing: Sustainable site planning Safeguarding water and water efficiency Energy efficiency Conservation of materials and resources Indoor environmental quality The Cleveland Green Building Coalition Cleveland Environmental Center

The Benefits of Green Building Environmental Benefits reduce energy, water and material consumption protect ecosystems Health and Safety benefits enhance occupant health and comfort prevent illness related to indoor environment Economic Benefits increase employee productivity reduce operating costs The Cleveland Green Building Coalition Cleveland Environmental Center

What is LEED? LEED stands for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design. The LEED rating system is a method for providing standardization and independent oversight to claims of environmental performance and efficiency for commercial buildings. LEED is a project of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), whose stated vision is “Green buildings and communities for a healthy and prosperous planet.” For more information, visit The Cleveland Green Building Coalition Cleveland Environmental Center

How is LEED ® used? A system with 69 possible points in six categories 26 points = LEED ® Certification 33 points = LEED ® Silver Certification 39 points = LEED ® Gold Certification 52 points = LEED ® Platinum Certification The six categories are Sustainable Sites Water Efficiency Energy & Atmosphere Materials & Resources Indoor Environmental Quality Innovation & Design Process For more information, visit The Cleveland Green Building Coalition Cleveland Environmental Center

Materials and Resources Credit 1: Building Reuse Intent: Extend the life of existing building stock, conserve resources, retain cultural resources, reduce waste and reduce environmental impacts of new buildings as they relate to materials manufacturing and transport. Potential Technologies and Strategies: Consider reuse of existing buildings, including structure, shell and non-shell elements. Remove elements that pose contamination risk to building occupants and upgrade outdated components such as windows, mechanical systems and plumbing fixtures. For more information, visit The Cleveland Green Building Coalition Cleveland Environmental Center

Materials and Resources Credit 2: Construction Waste Management Intent: Divert construction, demolition and land clearing debris from landfill disposal. Redirect recyclable recovered resources back to the manufacturing process. Redirect usable materials to appropriate sites. Potential Technologies and Strategies: Consider recycling land clearing debris, cardboard, metal, brick, concrete, plastic, clean wood, glass, gypsum wallboard, carpet and insulation. For more information, visit The Cleveland Green Building Coalition Cleveland Environmental Center
