The Road to the Perfect MOI [ the life and times of my composite bat ] By Trong Nguyen TEAMS Academy Baseball Bat Engineering

Table of Contents Design Requirements Design Alternatives Final Design Prototype Problems/Errors In the End Final Project

Design Requirements MOI: 5100 Mass: Light Center of Mass: close to the barrel Length: inches Braiding: 4-8 braid layers and 30°-65° angles End-cap:2-5 ounces Knob:0.5-2 ounces

Design Alternatives 1. Using Model to adjust the amount of end- cap and knob. 2. Max out stats then use model to cut off parts of bat to get desired MOI.

Use the Model!

Final Design Length: 30.5 inches Weight: 24 ounces Braid Layers: 8 Layers Barrel Braid Angle: 60° Handle Braid Angle: 32° End-cap: 2 ounces Knob: 2 ounces

Prototype Length: inches Weight: ounces Braid Layers: 8 Average Handle Angle: ° Average Barrel Angle: 58.75° End-cap:1.96 ounces Knob: 1.94 ounces

Problems/Errors Prediction of shell weight slightly off (no biggie). Added extra 2 oz accidentally (big biggie). Had to “Harpoon” the 2 oz. out (thanks Scott).

In the End MOI was GREAT! Weight was NOT GREAT! TargetActualPercent Error MOI % Weight24 oz %

Research Project Goal: Investigate the MOI measurement error through experimentation How we did it: Find MOI of three different bats (Thinh, Annelise, Linda) and look at percent error

Thinh Thinh’s BatAverage Percent Error Length0.11% Weight0.008% Center of Mass0.36% Period of Oscillation0.42%

Linda Linda’s BatAverage Percent Error Length0.19% Weight0.001% Center of Mass0.24% Period of Oscillation0.67%

Annelise Annelise’s BatAverage Percent Error Length0.20% Weight0.01% Center of Mass1.01% Percent of Oscillation0.58%

Conclusion The Period of Oscillation consistently has the highest rate of error of all measurements in finding MOI. It is because of human error.

Thank you! To Dr. Jumper, Mr. Doherty, Mr. Drain, Konstantine, and everyone who helped me make my bat.
