October means the Tour Du District, the Scholastic Book Fair and the Fall Fun Fair! Check back packs DAILY for information on all of these fun events. If you have misplaced your “Calling All Heroes” form, please consider ing your contact info and list of interests to You can find a list of PTO activities on page two of this LEADER. You can always give this information at our next PTO meeting on Tuesday, October 12 th. The meeting starts at 6:30pm and will feature a behind-the scenes look into what the “leaders” of Shaffer do on a daily basis! Feel free to bring a snack to share and as always, children are welcome! Teacher Tidbits/PTO Activities Second Grade’s Mrs. Tomko in Room 104 says: I would like to give my class two thumbs up for behavior. Keep it up class! Also, remember to continue to read,read, read!! Story maps may be completed at home if a student requests one. Cold season is upon us so I am looking for Kleenex donations. Thank you to all who have already donated, it is much appreciated! The K-Team says to Kindergarten parents: Students are working on patterns in mathematics and syllable blending and deletion in reading. Parents, please check back packs daily for homework and information. Thanks from the K-Team! See What Strikes Your Fancy and Be a Hero! Ask your student how many book reports they have done! Students must reach 25 to participate in FUN Day on May 27 th. Plus, all students who complete this standard receive a great prize from your PTO!

Nurse’s Notes Dates to Remember: October 6 th & 8 th – Dr. Tomley, the school doctor, will be at Shaffer to do the mandated school physical for K and 6 th grades. October 19 th – Don’t miss this opportunity to have your child’s mandated dental exam done by the Smile Dental Mobile. This is a great program that provides cleaning, x-rays and sealants for students, age appropriate. If you did not receive the required form for the school physical exam or the dental mobile exam, please call or visit Nurse Walter. Immunizations: Kindergarten students are required to have in writing from the doctor verification of: 4 DTP immunizations. The 4 th immunization after the 4 th birthday. 3 Polio 3 Properly spaced Hepatitis B 2 Measles, Mumps and Rubella 2 Varicella (chicken pox) or proof of the disease The mandated immunizations are given free of charge at the Allegheny County Health Dept. – M, T, Th, F from 9am-4pm and Wednesday 1pm-8pm. Students not up-to-date on the above immunizations are considered provisional and will be excluded from school if immunizations are not complete. Students will be bringing home the flier of featured books the week of October 12 th. Students will be able to shop during their regular Library class. Family Night at the Book Fair will be on Tuesday night, October 19 th from 6:30pm-8:00pm. Special guests will be on hand to read to our children! **Kids, come dressed as a super hero and receive a free book when you buy a book! Parents, you are welcome to come in and help your student shop. The last day of the book fair will be on Friday, October 22 nd.
