Coming to America The escape for Religious Freedom

Lesson Objectives You will be able to identify how and why the Puritans left England, (from previous class discussions.) You will investigate life on the Mayflower, and apply your learning in writing, ( a letter to a family member.)

Materials Needed : Paper Pencils Poster Board Markers Computers/internet access Book: If You Sailed the Mayflower in 1620 by, Anne McGovern

Why is learning about this important? Part of our history Compare past and present Look at what choices people made back then, analyze what they could have done differently What would life be like today if the puritans never made the journey over here

Class Discussion Review: Life in England Puritans could not practice their religion freely, often they would worship in secret. After a period of this unfair lifestyle, they got fed up September 16, 1620-The Pilgrims set sail on the Mayflower.

The Journey was long. There were 102 people on the ship which sailed for 65 Days! We will be learning more about life on the Mayflower after reading If you sailed on the Mayflower in 1620 by, Anne McGovern

After reading book, you will: 1. Break into groups of Go on website ing/voyage ing/voyage 3. Explore website, write what you discovered. Regroup, discuss, and publish information on poster board

Homework When you go home, you will each compose a letter as if you were sailing on the Mayflower. You will write to a family member (back home in England) about what it is like sailing on the Mayflower Include: Description of boat, people on the boat, what food you ate, what you expect when you land, etc.
