What Is Healthy Communities? Concept first appeared in WHO 1986 Professor Len Duhl, UC Berkeley Increased involvement with personal health. Problem: Lack of partnership and participation by the general public to improve community health

Healthy Communities Foundation Founded by 2 Public Health Professors at UC Berkeley Goal is to build “Healthy Communities Information Network” – to promote awareness of community issues & to support community involvement. Started in Summer 2003 for Marin, CA

Goals Customizable Provides information –dashboard view of indicators on community life –community health initiatives –best practices Tools to –support community decision making –facilitate improvement plans –track efforts overtime Focuses on dashboard of indicators

First Persona & Scenario Nancy Fisher – MPH Student –Active, vocal, advocates community services and actions –Working on master’s thesis and internship on healthy behaviors for children. –Networks with other health professionals Scenario –Drafting a teaching program to combat childhood obesity in Marin –Needs to find related information, and programs developed elsewhere

Second Persona & Scenario Marcos Smith, Ph.D. –Public Health Research Professional –Interested in regional differences on health/lifestyle issues –Goal to find easy accessible data and share expertise on improvement suggestions Scenario –Project to evaluate water quality across communities in the Bay Area –Search for indicator, performs analysis and shares report

Third Persona & Scenario Maruice Law –Engineer recently relocated to Marin –Child has asthma –Concerned about air quality of living environment Scenario –Child’s asthma exacerbates after relocation –Needs to find out local air quality information and researches for solutions

Current Design Indicators color-coded dials indicate how the community is doing (good/fair/bad) on different community health issues

Current Design – Task Analysis View Indicator Check the status of an indicator Review past history of indicator status Compare indicator status cross communities Read related information of an indicator Learn about indicator source View other indicators in same category Search Indicator Search indicator by category Free-text search by keyword Share Indicator Information Add and view comments about an indicator indicator information to others

Indicators –View Dashboard – Home Page Indicator Master List page Individual Indicator page –Search Search page –Share Registration page Current Design – System Pages

Healthy Communities - Demo type1/index.php

Lessons Learned Improved design using feedbacks from the low-fi prototype testing –Consistency –Shortcuts –Speak user’s language

Lessons Learned Overall UI design process Design for our personas Comparative analysis is good Expect the unexpected Iterate design carefully before interactive prototyping
