ENERGY CONSERVATION & EFFICIENCY PROGRAMMES - STRATEGIES INCLUSION INCLUSION OF ENERGY SECURITY AS ONE OF THE MAJOR FACETS OF THE COUNTRY’S STRATEGIC DEVELOPMENT PLAN. PROMOTE PROMOTE EFFICIENT USE OF ENERGY BOTH IN THE PUBLIC & PRIVATE SECTORS IN FIJI & PROMOTION OF ENERGY EFFICIENCY SERVICE COMPANIES. RESEARCH RESEARCH ON USE OF BIOFUELS FOR TRANSPORTATION & POWER GENERATION. SPECIFIC SPECIFIC PROGRAMMES WITH MAJOR CONSUMERS. RENEWABLE RENEWABLE ENERGY DEVELOPMENT

ENERGY SECURITY AND DEVELOPMENT PLANS Energy Energy Policy initially was captured in various Acts. Now a specific Fiji Energy Policy is being developed. Security is one of Strategic Areas within the Energy Policy Framework.  Ensuring  Ensuring security in the supply chain (current 3 weeks max, fuel quality & safety at storage facilities also transportation locally.)  Maximize  Maximize use of Baggase in Sugar Mills for electricity production.  Shifting  Shifting of focus in Sugar Mills towards ethanol production.

EFFICIENT USE OF ENERGY IN ALL SECTORS & PROMOTION OF ENERGY SERVICE COMPANIES The overall program has several sub-programs, which include: The overall program has several sub-programs, which include:  Appliance Labelling Programme  Energy Conservation and Implementation Programme.  Public Information and Awareness Programme Through an ADB funded TA we are looking at the creation of a framework to support development of Energy Efficiency Service Companies. Through an ADB funded TA we are looking at the creation of a framework to support development of Energy Efficiency Service Companies.

SPECIFIC EFFICIENCY & CONSERVATION PROGRAMMES WITH MAJOR CONSUMERS Managing Managing of Reactive Power – Use of Power Capacitors. Promote Promote Efficient Lighting with Companies in terms of sponsorship etc. Benefits Benefits of Data on Consumption. Load Load Shedding – Leveling of Peaks

USE OF BIOFUEL FOR TRANSPORTATION & POWER GENERATION Rigorous Rigorous testing on the use of Biofuel for Transportation Purposes. Use Use of Coconut Oil / Ethanol for Power Generation at Commercial and Domestic / Rural Communities. The initiative is also being looked at by the World Bank. Collaboration Collaboration with other Pacific Island Countries carrying out similar initiatives.

BROAD BROAD STRATEGIES ADOPTED  Explore  Explore all renewable energy resource available in the Country.  Ascertain  Ascertain the Availability and Reliability of the resource.  Technical  Technical and Economic Evaluation.  Researched  Researched Resource Implemented or Promoted for Development purposes. RENEWABLE ENERGY DEVELOPMENT

RENEWABLE ENERGY DEVELOPMENT (Resources being Researched)  Solar  Hydro  Biomass  Municipal Waste  Wind  Geothermal  Wave  Hybrid Remote Area Power Supply  Fuel Substitution
