The Main CLEO-c Program Prologue: Upsilons ~1-2 fb -1 ea. Y(1S),Y(2S), Y(3S)… Spectroscopy, Matrix Elements,  ee times existing world’s data Act I:  (3770) -- 3 fb -1 30M events, 6M tagged D decays (310 times MARK III) In the works Act II: √s ~ fb M D s D s, 0.3M tagged D s decays (480 times MARK III, 130 times BES II ) Act III:  (3100) -- 1 fb -1 1 Billion J/  decays (170 times MARK III 20 times BES II)

What is CLEO/CESR-c? CESR modified for  s ~ 3–5 GeV CLEO solenoid 1.5T  1T Long damping time (  ) problematic  add wigglers to decrease  Wiggler’s now being prototyped Expected machine performance: Best estimate: 3x10 32 cm -2 s GeV Wiggler-dominated radiation: L ~ E 2  E beam /E beam ~ 8x10 -4 at J/  Use existing CLEO III detector  s 4.1 GeV 3.77 GeV 3.1 GeV L (10 32 cm -2 s -1 )

Anticipated schedule July ‘01: install superconducting quads Low E machine studies + 10 GeV physics can coexist Nov ‘01:  (nS) running ~Oct ‘02: CLEO-c/CESR reconfig. silicon  drift chamber replacement additional RF cavities wiggler installation Spring ‘03: charm running Weak physics:  (3770), D S D S (~4.1 GeV) QCD: J/  3-4 year program for charm running Main 3 yr program plus:  threshold (m  ),  c  c threshold (pK  ),  ’, R “spot checks”,  (nS) w/ n>4

CLEO-c and R Direct measurement: systematics limited CLEO  s=10.58 GeV: systematics ~ 2% ISR, luminosity dominate Minimal: points near J/ ,  (3770), D S D S More detailed proposals: 100 pb -1 from J/   5 GeV 100 MeV steps below  (3770), 20 MeV above 10 4 hadronic events / step 50 pb -1 from 5 GeV  7 GeV Crystal Ball / Mark I discrepancy region 100 MeV steps, also 10 4 events / step

Charm spectroscopy: GeV Above DD threshold Study DD, D*D, D*D*, D**D final states, including angular distributions 2 MeV 10 5 events / step 130 days of running Radiative returns at  (3770): ∫Rds crosscheck of dedicated expt’s 1 <  s < 3 GeV: ~30,000 fully contained events for 3 fb -1 Recent BABAR,KLOE studies  statistical feasibility SYSTEMATICS < 5%? …under study Radiation function + acceptance FSR/ISR interference …
