MIT Project Model MIT media laboratory created an earring that took blood pressure readings and sent them to a computer in a project called “Affective Jewelry”.

Objectives Design and build a compact optical pulse oximeter that reads in pulse as an analog signal. Convert analog signal to digital, and transmit using Bluetooth technology to personal computer. Log data onto personal computer and provide user-friendly interface.

Research Areas –Sensors: Senses blood pulse and oxygen saturation optically and stores analog reading as a amplified version of original signal. [Christina] –Data Acquisition: Transmits analog signal to a digital signal and amplifies to prepare for transmission. [Daniel] Amplifier

Research Areas- cont. –Transmission: Transmits digital reading to computer via radio transmission. [Adam] –Data Interfacing: Bluetooth receiver inputs signal into PC for data storage and analysis. [Phillip]

Step-By-Step Process Step 1- Pulse rate is measured through the earlobe. Step 2- Pulse rate is read through an optical sensor that detects light frequency through bodypart. Step 3- Signal is converted from analog to digital and amplified to prepare for transmission. Step 4- Digital signal is transmitted through radio transmission using bluetooth technology. Step 5- Organizational center for signal which receives transmission into personal computer. Step 6- Personal computer logs appropriate data and sets off alarm if pulse is not within appropriate range.
