SWEEDHA Meeting 11/15/02 History of Organization First organization of EE Department heads in 1963 at ASEE Annual meeting (EEDHA) –Advisory group on accreditation –Advisory group to the IEEE Professional Group on Education –Independent group to discuss mutual problems –Method of dissemination of educational methods –Met at ASEE and FIE meetings First regional group formed in 1967-Southeastern US schools In 1981, the organization decided to go independent of ASEE and IEEE and received funding from NSF to reorganize and in 1984, the first NEEDHA was held in Hilton Head, SC

SWEEDHA Meeting 11/15/02 History of Organization In 1986, the International Engineering Consortium (IEC) took over the “management” of NEEDHA The Southwestern Regional Group of NEEDHA members (SWEEDHA) was first organized in 1990 or Regional meetings are generally held in the Fall and rotate between host universities In 2001, NEEDHA became the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department Heads Association (ECEDHA) SWEEDHA changed name to SWECEDHA

SWEEDHA Meeting 11/15/02 Status 2002 membership: 276 –Members from US, Canada, Puerto Rico, Mexico, and South America –Dues are $300 per year –324 total accredited programs (85% penetration) –18 Canadian members 2003 Annual Meeting at the Turtle Bay Resort, Oahu, Hawaii 2003 Annual meeting attendance: Annual meeting in Orlando, Florida
