Health Promotion Unit – 5 years Objectives: To expand the exposure of the healthy living project 2/3 of all kindergarten schools in Rahat have undergone the intervention together with an additional 30 kindergartens in other Bedouin settlements. Post intervention analysis depicts changes in behavior as well as upkeep of these changes. As new population enters the kindergartens a new cycle of the intervention program is needed.

Health Promotion Unit – 5 years Objectives – Cont.: To expand the healthy living style project to 10% additional workplaces in the region To date the project was undertaken in the University with participation of 200 employees. Pre-post analysis show change in knowledge, attitudes and behavior of employees. Regardless of efforts, project was not adopted by other workplaces and the University has not expanded the project.

Health Promotion Unit – 5 years Objectives – Cont.: To further develop areas of health promotion within the curriculum of the FOHS Health promotion is currently taught in nursing school, emergency medicine and occupational therapy; medical students are taught the smoking cessation brief intervention.

The Center for Smoking Prevention and Cessation

5-Year Objectives To consolidate the coordinated efforts in the Negev regarding prevention and smoking cessation: regarding staff, funding, opening of smoking cessation groups All participating organizations have agreed to fund the operations of the Center (Israel Cancer Association, Clalit Health Services, Maccabi Health Services, Meuhedet, Ministry of Health).

5-Year Objectives – Cont. Increase number of groups to at least 6/year Number of groups 8-12/year. Personal consultation service Operational at CHS, and Meuhedet.

To establish a student initiated program for smoking cessation consultation in hospitalized patients – Brief Intervention Program: –5 th year medical students, FOHS, BGU –Family medicine clerkship –3 hrs workshop – group discussions, simulations, patient-guided interview –“Real intervention” in clinics during rounds –More practice- intervention for hospitalize patients (6 th year, internal med round).

5-Year Objectives – Cont. To promote awareness to the center’s activities by aggressive marketing and promotion – increase marketing budget by 30%: –Radio + TV interviews to increase awareness –All calls for new groups are delivered by to all primary care physicians, posters in all languages at the clinics, the center’s cards are distributed throughout the primary care clinics (in all languages).

Teaching Centers – 5 years Objectives: To continue and develop innovative models for community teaching Teaching in the community continues to develop with new programs introduced (such as the brief intervention for smoking cessation). To expand the “academic HMO district” initiative to include additional community clinics of all HMOs in the region CHS clinics are included and negotiations with Maccabi are ongoing.

5 Year Objectives: To expand Sial’s research activities by 10% yearly – number of funded projects Number of funded projects have remained stable, though increase in amount of funding by over 10% is noted. To increase Sial’s involvement in audits of HMO’s activities and population health status – 2-4 projects annually Examples: Audit of cardiovascular disease prevention in the Bedouin population, INR management by referrant nurses.
