Wages and employment trends  Median wages: $13.77 hourly, $28,650 annual  Employment (2008) :484,000 employees  Projected job openings ( ): 217,800  Formal training, experience from externships and certification will put you higher on the pay scale when you become a medical assistant.

To become a medical assistant…  Take some Medical assisting courses (some high schools have it and some don’t)  Improve you opportunities by getting certified.  You will be responsible for everything from answering phones and filing medical records to drawing blood and processing lab specimens. You must be detail-oriented and work well with a team.  You must be friendly and caring if you want to become a medical assistant because you will be the first person they’ll be seeing.

How long it takes  Programs usually last 1 year and result in a certificate or diploma, or 2 years and result in associate’s degree.  Courses cover anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology, as well as typing, transcription, recordkeeping, accounting, and insurance processing.

Benefits you get are:  Medical/dental/vision plan  Vacation and sick pay  Retirement plan (e.g. 401k)  School tuition aid/reimbursement  Disability  There is no relocating fees for a medical assistant.
