Strengths-based approach to assessment Information taken from: Generalist Case Management, A Workbook for Skill Development by Tricia McClam and Marianne Woodside

What is strengths-based approach?  Focus on positive characteristics, abilities, and experiences of the client.  Building upon client’s strengths when addressing current issues.  You are most interested in the client’s resources and abilities.  You role is to facilitate finding your client’s strengths.  Focusing on positives instead of negatives empower clients to believe change is possible and that they have the ability to make it happen.

How do implement the strengths based approach?  Begin by asking clients to recall how they solved problems in the past.  Point out successes that they have had in school, work, home, relationships, etc.  Examples: “Tell me about a time when you faced a similar problem, how did you handle it.” “What do you consider your most important ability?”

Strengths based approach  You will also need to identify the client’s readiness for change.  Look at client’s support network.  Utilize motivational interviewing and stages of change information.

Stages of Change  Precontemplation  Contemplation  Preparation  Action  Maintenance  Termination
