Aristotle on Happiness: Happiness (eudaimionia) and well-being are synonyms. Happiness is a pleasant feeling which permeates an entire human being and results from virtuous activity. Happiness is possible in proportion to the extent that individuals virtuously exercise intellectual abilities. The philosopher can be happiest of all. Slaves. Lower class artisans and children are incapable of happiness and women are capable of only the lower levels of happiness. The reasons are that children lack self control and rational choice, slaves lack rational choice and women have meager capacities. Happiness is fostered by “good birth, plenty of friends, wealth, good children, plenty of children, a happy old age, and also such body excellences as health, beauty, strength, large stature, athletic powers, together with fame, honor, good luck and virtue”.
