 Definition - Earth is at the center of the solar system being orbited by the Sun and other planets  (sketch a picture of a geocentric solar system)
Archeo-Measuring the speed of light
The “space” between objects in space is so large that normal units of measurement don’t work; for example the sun is 93,000,000,000,000 miles away from.
Galileo, Tycho, and Kepler. Galileo is considered the father of modern physics, and even modern science. He performed a variety of experiments, such as:
OUTCOME QUESTION(S): S1-4-04: How was the process of science important in showing the Sun is the centre of our solar system? S1-4-05: How does the position.
History of Astronomy How have ideas about the solar system and our place in it changed over time? How have ideas about the solar system and our place.

Light!. General Properties of Light Isaac Newton: believed light was a series of fast moving small particles Now we know: light behaves both as particles.
The Speed of Light: Galileo Galileo (Italian) in early 1600s attempted to determine light’s speed by opening a lantern which would be seen by a person.
Ptolemaic model In the second century CE, Ptolemy, who lived in the Egyptian town of Alexandria, produced a mathematical representation based on observation.
 Danish astronomer ( )  Built an astronomical observatory on an island  Measured positions of stars and planets over a period of 20 years.
Speed of light Chapter 27.2 Notes. The Speed of Light It was not known whether light travels instantaneously or with finite speed until the late 1600s.

Just So You Know…  Born in Denmark 1644  Studied at the University of Copenhagen  Nine years in Royal Observatory of Paris  Edited Tycho Brahe’s manuscripts  Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy  Born in Denmark 1644  Studied at the University of Copenhagen  Nine years in Royal Observatory of Paris  Edited Tycho Brahe’s manuscripts  Professor of Mathematics and Astronomy

Discovering the Speed of Light  Galileo attempted first and failed  Roemer became curious while observing the orbit of Jupiter’s moons  Time elapsed between eclipses of Jupiter's moons became shorter as Earth moved closer to Jupiter and became longer as Earth moved farther away.

 Hypothesized a finite speed of light  Used known distances of Earth and Jupiter’s orbits to get a rough estimation  2.3 x 10 8 m/s Discovering the Speed of Light
