3 Why a networking course ? n Computer Networks no longer exclusive domain of engineers and technicians n Computer Networks in use by organizations n Need for employees trained to use and manage computer/network applications

4 Business/IS versus Computer science professionals Computer science Business/IS professionals Computer science and electrical engineering students are trained to work in hardware, software, and networking vendor firms, such as Microsoft, IBM, Oracle, and Cisco Systems. B/IS students are trained to work in end user organizations, such as banks, government agencies, and manufacturing firms-- organizations that use Computer Networks to get their work done

5 Course objectives n Describe the layers in the OSI 7-layer model and analyze their application in real-world networks. n Evaluate network and stand-alone applications. n Describe the various types of networks and internetworks and evaluate their application in a variety of business situations. n List and describe the principles of good network design, network management, and network security. n Design, configure, and evaluate user and group profiles on a local area network.

6 Course objectives n Design and evaluate maintenance procedures for user accounts on a local area network. n Analyze data communications needs in a network environment. n Perform traffic analysis on a local area network. n Analyze network design for efficiency and resilience.
