Intro to Genetics Today is TUESDAY.  What is a chromosome?  What is the function of DNA?  What do genes do?  Put these in order from biggest to smallest: genes, chromosomes, DNA  WEEKLY GOAL! Write in complete sentences! Don’t talk during the Catalyst!

Intro to Genetics By the end of today, SWBAT…  Determine if they achieved 85% or higher for each GLE on last week’s test  Define the essential terms of genetics  Differentiate between genotype and phenotype

Agenda – JAM PACKED OF FUN!  Catalyst Review  Mastery tracking  Genes and Alleles  Genotype/Phenotype  Practice Practice PRACTICE  EQ HOMEWORK: Genotype/Phenotype worksheet; Mastery Tracking reflection questions

What’s a résumé?

Your Points

Percent Mastery  Your Points / Total Points x 100  Did you achieve our BIG GOAL? 85% or above mastery of each GLE?  If you did not, come to tutoring.  We need to practice the information and test questions.  A lot of us know the basics, but we have to step it up.

Catalyst Review  What is a chromosome?  What is the function of DNA?  What do genes do?  Put in order from biggest to smallest: genes, chromosomes, DNA

Where are we going with this?  By the end of this unit, you will understand how we inherit traits from our parents  If a mother has blue eyes and a father has brown eyes, can you predict if their child will have blue or brown eyes? Can you calculate it?  Can you figure out who the baby daddy is?

GENETICS  Key Point #1: Organisms inherit genes from their parents.  Genes are pieces of DNA that you inherit from your parents. ONE gene instructs the cell how to make ONE protein.

Check out my beads…  What does this necklace represent?  A chromosome.  What does just one long piece of this necklace represent?  A gene.  What is each bead?  DNA. Chromosome Gene DNA

Check out my picture… CHROMOSOME GENE DNA

Wait a second…  Can you roll your tongue?  How come some of you can roll your tongue and some of you can’t?  BECAUSE GENES CAN BE DIFFERENT! They come in different “flavors”…. called

Alleles  Key Point #2: Alleles are different versions of genes.  Mother: One allele; Father: One allele. (Two total.)  There are two types of alleles: dominant and recessive.

Genotype  Key Point #3: Genotype is the combination of alleles inherited from the parents. Phenotype is the physical expression of those alleles.  Ex. Eye color genotype: Ee, EE, ee  Ex. Eye color phenotype: Brown Eyes, blue eyes, green eyes

Easy way to remember  GENotype  “GENe”  PHenotype  “PHysical characteristics”

Independent Practice (IP)  Complete the worksheet. Write in COMPLETE SENTENCES.  What you do not finish is homework.

Key Point Wrap-Up  Key Point #1: Organisms inherit GENES from their parents.  ONE gene instructs the cell how to make ONE protein.  Key Point #2: All living organisms have two alleles for every gene.  Alleles are different versions of genes.  Key Point #3: Genotype is the combination of alleles inherited from the parents. Phenotype is the physical expression of those alleles.

Exit Question  Joephy has black hair. Is this an example of a genotype or phenotype?  In your own words, what is an allele?  Put these in order from smallest to biggest: genes, chromosomes, DNA Write in complete sentences! Don’t talk during the Exit Question!
