Facts about Britain *The population of Britain is 58 million. *The official language is English, but in Wales and Scotland Celtic languages are spoken. *The term British refers to people, places and things from England, Scotland and Wales. Each kingdom also has its own identity.

The capital city, London, is in the southeast and is situated at both sides of the River Thames.

British food English Breakfast

Breakfast Between 7:00 p.m. and 9:00p.m. A traditional English breakfast consists of eggs, bacon, sausages, fried bread, mushrooms and baked beans. A typical English breakfast is a bowl of cereals, a slice of toast, orange juice and a cup of coffee.

Afternoon tea This is a small meal, not a drink. Traditionally it consists of tea or coffee served with scones, sandwiches or pastries.

Lunch Lunch - between 12:00 and 1:30 p.m. Many children at school and adults at work will have a 'packed lunch'. It consists of a sandwich, a packet of crisps, a piece of fruit and a drink.

Dinner Dinner - between 12:00 and 1:30 p.m. A British meal for dinner is meat and vegetables.

Nowadays, most people in Britain are eating curry. Rice or pasta are now favoured as the ‘British Dinner ’. pasta

British Animals Many British families own pets. The largest mammal is the red deer. You can also see foxes and rabbits. rabbitfox

Red deer feed on grass. In summer they only feed in the morning and in the evening. They also have strong teeth.

Sheep Some sheep are kept for meat. Others are kept for wool.

Squirrel Squirrel live in forests. They eat fruits and nuts.

Robin The UK's favourite bird - its has bright red breast. They will sing at night next to street lights.

Red robins eat earthworms.

Badger Badgers live underground. They line the home with leaves and grass. Badgers usually come out at night to look for ground squirrels.

Hedgehog Hedgehogs live in forests. They are active during evenings and nights. Hedgehog food includes: worms, insects (bees and spiders), snakes and mice.

School Uniform Children wear a school uniform.
