NGAO System Design: AO System (WBS 3.2) & Laser Facility (WBS 3.3) Design Inputs & Outputs Peter Wizinowich NGAO Team Meeting #9 August 24, 2007

Presentation Sequence Inputs –KAON summary table (includes all of the inputs) –Management Plan –Requirements (SCRD, SRD, FRD) –Performance Budgets –Trade Studies –System Architecture (see next presentation) Outputs –Conceptual Designs –Functional Requirements

Inputs: KAONs /twiki_oir/pub/Keck/ NGAO/NewKAONs/ KAON_summary.xls

Management Plan System Design Phase Planning WBS dictionary defines each WBS element See appendix 9 of KAON 414 Systems Engineering Management Plan (SEMP) =NGAO_SD_System_Eng_Mgmt_Plan_v20.doc MS Project Plan defines WBS elements, resources & schedule (see KAON 481 for mid-year replan) See next 2 slides See previous presentation for design phase management details

Management Plan – WBS 3.2

Management Plan – WBS 3.3

Inputs: Requirements Overview of Requirements documents Science Case Requirements Document (SCRD) –1-page science requirements summary (next slide) System Requirements Document (SRD) –Instrument Baseline Requirements Document Functional Requirements Document (FRD) –Sample: section 7.2 from draft FRD OpticalRelay.doc

Inputs: Science Require- ments /Keck/NGAO/070824_Remote_ NGAO_Meeting_9/Architecture _reqments_summary_v7.xls

Outputs The AO system & laser facility design efforts are expected to produce the following: A revised & complete set of functional requirements for each WBS element –These will be incorporated into the FRD (they should be provided in the FRD format) –FRD configuration management is TBD Likely 1 person to approve/release minor changes & draw major changes to EC’s attention These can include redistribution of the performance budgets One or more design concepts for each WBS element that demonstrate feasibility to satisfy the functional requirements A KAON documenting the products of each WBS element –Especially, the design concept & its evaluation versus the functional requirements –Also, results of any trades or analyses, identification of any issues and/or technical risks & suggested risk mitigation –Appropriate WBS elements can be grouped together in a KAON –These KAONs will be used as a basis for the preliminary design Cost information is not an expected output of this phase, however any relevant cost information should be provided for inclusion in WBS (costing) The overall design will be documented in the System Design Manual (SDM) with reference to the KAONs and FRD
