Overview “So, how’s the dissertation coming?”

1/13/2008 Kristin Martin 4 UNC’s ETD Project Starting in Spring 2006, graduating students have the option to submit their thesis electronically or in paper –PDF main document –Supplemental files of any format 80% chose electronic, and the number is rising By Spring 2008, all theses must be submitted electronically

Metadata Overview “Hmm, that’s a very interesting topic you’ve got there…”

1/13/2008 Kristin Martin 7 ETD Metadata: Considerations Three standards to follow: 1.Networked Digital Library of Theses and Dissertations: 2.UNC’s local CONTENTdm data dictionary 3.Cataloging standards in place for paper dissertations (AACR2, LCRI) Of course, these don’t always agree…

1/13/2008 Kristin Martin 8 ETD Basic Metadata Layout Qualified Dublin Core + extras = 35 fields Special additions: NDLTD –Degree Information: Degree Name Degree Level Department/School Discipline

1/13/2008 Kristin Martin 9 ETD Basic Metadata Layout CONTENTdm data dictionary –Host –Digital Collection MARC records –Author chief source –Date (Title Page) vs. Date (Graduated) –Department name in authorized form

1/13/2008 Kristin Martin 10 Record Creation in Practice Two major cataloging agencies working with ETDs: –University Library –Health Sciences Library Practice between the two agencies has not been consistent Examples:Discipline vs. Department “Dissertation Note”

1/13/2008 Kristin Martin 11 Additional Challenges Developing the workflow from receiving documents at the Grad School to getting them into CONTENTdm Working within the CONTENTdm software –Difficult to do certain types of batch changes –Problems with character encoding –Problems with compound objects –Problems with embargoed documents PDFs that are images or “Ghostscript” Developing and implementing the DC-MARC crosswalk

MARC Metadata Transformation “You’re done with your research and just need to write? You’ll be done in no time!”

1/13/2008 Kristin Martin 13 Transformation Background Why DC → MARC? –Selected fields can be prepopulated from information supplied by the Graduate School –Difficulty maintaining consistent URL without beginning in CONTENTdm Collecting records from CONTENTdm –Export options were insufficient –Pulling all records down in raw from server Use of Perl modules to transform data: –XML::Simple works with XML output –MARC module to create new marc record

1/13/2008 Kristin Martin 14 Transformation Process Steps 1.Copy on sever in desc.all file 2.Perform transformation using perl scripts: a.Clean up raw metadata and turn desc.all into valid XML file b.Output MARC records using the XML::Simple and Marc modules 3.Loading records into OCLC and local catalog
