The Changing Student, The Changing Library Joel A. Cohen, Ph. D. Associate Vice President for Library and Information Services

21 st Century Students  They breathe technology (but drink coffee!)  They think they are smarter than they are.  They don’t work at civilized hours.  They are social in a technology sort of way.  It’s a web, web, web, web, world.  On the go.

Library last renovated in 1988 Why change now? A Confluence of:  Emphasis on engaged learning to foster retention improvements  Changing technology  Student/faculty social and intellectual needs changing  Changing paradigm for libraries  Changing instructional paradigm toward group projects  Consistent student requests for extended schedule study space  New synergies among academic units such as the Center for Teaching Excellence, Information Technology Services, and the Tutoring Center  Successes in attracting students & faculty result in increased wear & tear

Changing Technology  Technology revolution in the library  Most access to journals and other research is online  Access to the extended Connect NY collection (8 million volumes) is through an online catalog  Assignments are dependent on word and media (e.g. video, audio) processing and Internet technology Full Text Holdings

Tutoring Center

“ When I dropped everything in the outside world, and just sat down to do what I had to for my classes, I raised my GPA.5. Study center really helped me last year, and will continue to help me.” — Student Response The Study Center is open to all students and is an opportunity for students to focus on their academic work in a quiet environment where tutors are available to answer questions and provide academic support. Student Center is a requirement by the associate deans of students on probation or academically at risk. Study Center is required by the NCAA that all freshmen and transfer student-athletes participate in at least six hours of study center per week for the first semester. Any upper class student-athlete that does not maintain a GPA of 2.3 or higher are required to remain in the center. Study Center

A Work in Progress Today

A Work in Progress

Increasing Numbers- Increasing Wear & Tear

Our wish list New carpeting - we have a patchwork of different Types of carpeting (in different stages of fading) throughout the library and it overshadows every change we have made Windows- New window treatments - the vertical blinds are outdated and falling apart; some window seals are failing. Collaborative learning spaces and Tutoring Center. Compact shelving - moving the rest of the book collection to the lower level would open up more space for collaborative learning space on the main level. New furniture – Students are using what we have but more tables and computer chairs are needed. We have recycled old furniture but there is a limited supply and not everything fits our needs New ceiling treatment-Both lighting grids and ceilings need updating A Faculty Resource Center that would bring the Faculty Technology Services office and the Center for Teaching Extended operating hours
