1 Welcome To Rural Sociology 2225 “Science, Technology and Society” Mary Grigsby Associate Professor of Rural Sociology Division of Applied Social Sciences

Topics of Discussion: Overview of class syllabus and assignments Getting to know you Assignments Topics list 2

3 Getting To Know You Exercise Science, technology and society and our lives Draw a card. You may notice a number on the card. Why is that number there? All will be revealed on the next overhead.

Take a few minutes and write the following on the card: Your name. Your major. Your year in college. Your Career Goals. Three scientific or technological innovations that you believe have changed society and why you think this. Getting to Know You Exercise

Guidelines The number on your card indicates the order in which people will come to the front of the room to share information. No two people can use the same scientific or technological innovation as their example.

If you want to move up in the order you are slated to share information: Listen carefully. If you note something you have in common with the person sharing information (other than the innovation they have identified as important) raise your hand. This signals them to throw you the ball. Once you have the ball come to the front of the room and wait until they have completed speaking and write what you have in common with them on the board. Now it is your turn.

7 If multiple people raise their hands, the person who has the floor is the one who has to make a judgment call on who was first and throw the ball to them. If nothing in common is identified we return to the number order on the cards.
